Depression is one of the most common ailments of contemporary times known to have gripped millions of individuals. It is accompanied by feelings of sadness, gloom and misery and can drain you completely. In order to combat this silent killer, it is essential for you to have a strong willpower and not give in to feelings of despair and dejection.

The basic nature of depression is so harsh that it does not allow one to resort to self help. But if you are determined to battle the blues, you must seek professional advice. There are various types of depressive disorders and it is essential for you to consult a psychologist, psychiatrist or clinical social worker in order to get an appropriate diagnoses and treatment. Depression treatment through self help can be hard but it is not impossible. You must try to seek help from as many people as you can and develop a strong support group. Family, friends and colleagues can also help, if you approach them.

The main thing to remember is that you must take one step at a time and stick to it. Gather yourself and move on with life. The first and foremost thing is to get up and act. You can go for a walk, talk to a friend or try doing just about anything instead of sitting in a dark and dingy corner and brooding.

Eat your meals regularly and avoid staying hungry. A well balanced det comprising of all the essential vitamins, minerals, proteins, carbohydrates and essential fatty acids helps treat depression.

Regulate your sleep cycle. Try to go to bed at the same time everyday and avoid late nights or oversleeping.

Keep your mind occupied. If you have nothing to do, you will keep sulking and thinking about negative things instead of positive ones.
