Psychiatric Disorders are also known as mental disorders and are considered to be more serious than those disorders that can be treated with the help of psychotherapy alone. These disorders need the intervention of a psychiatrist who is authorized to prescribe medications. There are over 300 Psychiatric Disorders listed in the American Psychiatric association’s Diagnostic and Statistical manual of Mental disorders fourth edition (DSM-IV).
A Psychiatric Disorder is a behavioral or psychological syndrome or pattern that occurs in an individual and that is associated with current suffering (a painful symptom) or disability (impairment in one of more areas of functioning) or with a significantly increased risk of suffering death, pain, disability or an important loss of freedom. In addition, this pattern must not be merely an expectable and culturally sanctioned response to a particular event such as death of a loved one. Whatever it’s original causes, it must currently be considered a manifestation of a behavioral, psychological or biological dysfunction in the individual. Neither deviant behavior (politics, religious or sexual) nor conflicts that are primarily between the individual and the society are considered mental disorders unless the deviance or conflict is a symptom of a dysfunction in the individual.
