Multiple Sclerosis     

Multiple Sclerosis is also known as disseminated sclerosis and it is a condition wherein the immune system self voluntarily strikes the central nerves system and leads to the loss of nerve fiber covering. Multiple sclerosis is a condition which usually strikes young adults and is more common among women than men.

Multiple Sclerosis is considered to be a dangerous ailment as it hinders the ability of the nerve cells of the brain and spinal cord to communicate with each other. The name ‘multiple sclerosis’ signifies lesions or scars present in the white matter of the brain and of the spinal cord which is primarily made up of myelin.

Signs and symptoms

The most common symptom that is noted in multiple sclerosis disorder is that of involuntary eye movement. A multiple sclerosis attack is episodic and critical in nature and worsens with time.

Other neurological symptoms that are observed in multiple sclerosis are:

  • Cramping of the muscles
  • Ataxia- a condition in which the individual has problems in coordination and balance
  • Problems with speech
  • Muscle weakness and fatigue
  • Severe and chronic pain
  • Problems in bladder control and bowel movement
  • Severe mood swings
  • Problems in swallowing
  • Problems in vision

Multiple sclerosis attacks are unpredictable and do not have a number of preceding symptoms. These attacks can however be precipitated by the following factors:

  • spring and summer season
  • Infections like common cold, flue and gastroenteritis
  • Emotional or work related stress
  • Pregnancy (especially during the last trimester)

Treatment of Multiple sclerosis:

The condition of multiple sclerosis is still not found to have a permanent treatment. However, certain therapies and medicines are used to deal with this condition. Alternative treatments are also becoming popular but enough scientific research is not available to back their effectiveness.
