A classic migraine is a sub-type of migraine accompanied by aura symptoms before a full blast headache phase.
Symptoms of classic migraine:
Severe headache with pounding sensation in the forehead, jaw, temples or around one eye.
The headache begins on one side of the head and can branch out to the other side as well.
Headache is accompanied by nausea, fatigue, dizziness and visual disturbances such as seeing bright lights, flashy zigzag lines etc, and increased sensitivity to light sound and smell.
Aura symptoms can further be accompanied by temporary loss of vision, slurred speech, tingling sensations, muscle weakness on one side, numbness of the limbs and prickling sensations in the arms, hands, nose, mouth, lips and tongue.
Treatment of classic migraine:
If you experience any of the above symptoms it is essential for you to consult a doctor. Treatment includes the administration of various drugs such as clonidine, sodium vaporate and methysergide.
Preventative treatments:
Lying down or resting in a darkened room can provide relief.
Avoid sitting in a room with bright or flashing lights.
Alternate hot and cold compress can provide immense relief in case of a migraine attack.
A tomato juice drink helps during an attack.
Get a head, neck and forehead massage.
Try deep breathing exercises.
Press on the pressure points at the back of the neck below the skull. These are responsible for the release of endorphins.
Inhaling the essential oils of sandalwood, lavender and marjoram can provide relief.
Biofeedback techniques also help prevent migraines.
Other alternative therapies include stress management, spa therapy, acupuncture, reiki and shiatsu.
Take your meals on time and avoid staying hungry.
Avoid taking foods such as chocolates, nuts, processed meats and tyramine rich foods that are known to trigger migraines.
Avoid red wines and alcohol.
Quit smoking.
