Uses of Tranylcypromine:
Tranylcypromine is an antidepressant belonging to the class of mono amine oxidase inhibitors (MAOIs) and is used in the treatment of major depression without melancholia or endogenous depression. It is also administered for the treatment of cocaine addiction, headaches, panic attacks and eating disorders.
Dosage:
It is essential for you to take the medication as prescribed by your physician in order to avoid any side effects. You must also not stop taking the medication abruptly without the consent of your doctor as it may worsen some of the symptoms of the disorder you are being treated for. The drug can be ingested with or without food. Tranylcypromine can be taken orally as a tablet twice a day or as directed by your doctor.
Warning and Precautions:
Do not take Tranylcypromine if you are allergic to it.
It should not be taken if you are on other medications such as antihistamines, barbiturates, antidepressants, anticoagulants or aspirin.
Talk to your doctor if you have a history of brain tumors, thyroid disorder, enlarged prostrate, cardiovascular disease, blood dyscrasias.
Do not take this medicine if you have kidney or liver disease.
Oral contraceptives, diet pills or sleeping pills should not be taken along with Tranylcypromine.
Tell your doctor if you are pregnant or lactating before taking this medicine.
Patients with epilepsy and hypertension need to take caution.
Alcohol must not be consumed when on this medication.
Avoid driving or operating any hazardous machinery that requires mental alertness when taking Tranylcypromine.
Tranylcypromine may result in fatal hypertensive crisis such as occipital headache, neck stiffness, nausea, dizziness, increased sweating, photophobia, chest pain and dilation of pupils.
Caution is advised when administering this medicine to the elderly and children.
Side effects of Tranylcypromine:
Some of the most common side effects of the medication include drowsiness, weight gain, dizziness, nausea, constipation, headache, insomnia, vomiting, blurred vision, dry mouth, confusion, aggression and sleep disturbances.
Overdose:
Symptoms of Tranylcypromine overdose include anxiety, insomnia, restlessness, agitation, confusion, weakness, hypotension, drowsiness, shock, twitching of muscles and coma. In case of an overdose of the medication, you must report to your doctor at the earliest or contact your local poison control center.
