Flunarizine: Drug Information

Drug Class: Antihistamine

Uses of Flunarizine:

Flunarizine is an antihistamine drug that is used in the treatment of cerebral vascular disorders, vertigo, migraine and peripheral vascular disease. It is a calcium blocking agent that impacts the activity of calcium in the heart and blood vessels. It relaxes the blood vessels and increases the transport of oxygen and blood to the heart.

Dosage:

Take this medicine as directed by your doctor and do not stop taking it abruptly as it may worsen your present condition.

Warning and precautions:

Do not take Flunarizine if you are hypersensitive to the medication.

Flunarizine should not be taken with other medicines such as phenytoin, carmazepine and valporic acid as they reduce plasma levels.

This medicine is not recommended for pregnant or nursing women as it may harm the baby. Thus, it is essential for you to notify your doctor if you are pregnant, planning to become pregnant or nursing before taking this medicine.

This medicine should not be taken if you have agastrointestinal tract obstruction, urinary tract infection (UTI) or acute porphyria.

Tell your doctor if your have been diagnosed with or have a history of epileptic seizures, kidney or liver disease, cardiovascular disease, glaucoma or brain tumors.

Caution and regular drug monitoring is advised when administering this medication to the elderly.

Do not drive or operate heavy machinery after taking Flunarizine.

Side effects of Flunarizine:

Some of the most common side effects of the medication include drowsiness, weight gain, headache, depression gastric pain, dizziness, dry mouth, insomnia, vomiting, constipation and extrapyramidal reactions

Overdose:

In case of an overdose of the medication, you must report to your doctor at the earliest or contact your local poison control center.
