Floxyfral: Drug Information

Generic Name: Fluvoxamine Maleate

Brand Name: Floxyfral

Drug Class: Selective Serotonin Reuptake Inhibitors

Uses of Floxyfral:

Floxyfral is a selective serotonin Reuptake Inhibitor (SSRI) and is used in the treatment of Obsessive Compulsive Disorders. It works by inhibiting the reuptake of the neurotransmitter serotonin in the brain.

Dosage:

Floxyfral can be taken orally with or without food. Take this medicine as directed by your doctor at regular intervals. Do not stop taking it abruptly as it may worsen some of your present symptoms.

Warning and Precautions:

Do not takeFloxyfral if you are hypersensitive to it or to any other selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors.

This medicine should not be taken with other medicines such as Terfenadine, Astemizole or Cisapride.

Caution is advised when administering this medicine to patients diagnosed with or having a history of mania, seizures, liver dysfunction, major depressive disorder and epilepsy.

Cigarette smoking should be stopped when taking Floxyfral.

Tell your doctor if you are pregnant or lactating before taking this medicine.

Do not consume alcohol when taking Floxyfral.

Intake of this medicine may impair your ability to drive or operate hazardous machinery.

Close drug monitoring is required when giving this drug to the elderly.

Drug Interactions:

Floxyfral can increase the activity of Carbamazepine toxicity. Thus, the two medicines should not be taken concomitantly. It can increase the serum levels of clonazipine. If taking anticoagulants, you must tell your doctor as dose adjustments might be required. Floxyfral should not be taken along with mono amine oxidase inhibitors (MAOIs) or within 14 days of discontinuing treatment with MAOIs.

Side Effects of Floxyfral:

Some of the most common side effects of the medication include headache, asthenia, flu syndrome, chills, palpitations, nausea, diarrhea, constipation, anorexia, tooth disorder, somnolence, insomnia, dyspepsia, flatulence, dysphagia, dizziness, tremors, anxiety, nervousness, dry mouth, decreased libido, depression, agitation, hypertonia, hypertension, vasodilatation, CNS stimulation, taste alteration, upper respiratory tract infection, increased sweating, urinary frequency, impotence, abnormal ejaculation, and anorgasmia.

Overdose:

In case of an overdose of the medication, you must report to your doctor at the earliest or contact your local poison control center.
