Cylert: Drug Information

Generic name: Pemoline

Brand Name: Cylert

Uses of Cylert:

Cylert is recommended for the treatment of Attention deficit disorder (ADD) in children above 6 years of age. It is usually administered along with psychotherapy and counseling. One of the biggest disadvantages of this medicine is the accompanying risk of hepatitis in 1 out of every 1000 patients. Cylert can cause irreversible liver damage and has even resulted in death and cases of liver transplant. This medicine is no longer available in the United States as it was withdrawn in 2005.

Dosage:

It is essential to take the medication as prescribed by your doctor. You can take it orally with or without food. Cylert is a habit forming drug and has high potential for abuse and must not be taken for a long period of time.

Warning and precautions:

Do not take this medicine if you are hypersensitive to it.

It is essential to perform a liver function test before taking Cylert.

It is essential for the physician to discuss the side effects of the medication with the patient or his family prior to prescribing it. Written consent from the patient is required before prescribing Cylert.

This medicine should not be co-administered with anti-epileptic drugs such as Tegerol.

All central nervous system (CNS) depressants should be avoided when taking this medicine.

This medicine is not recommended for patients with kidney or liver disorders, seizures, Tourette’s syndrome or epilepsy.

Do not take this medicine if you are pregnant or lactating.

Avoid the consumption of alcohol when taking Cylert.

Do not drive or operate hazardous machinery after taking this medicine.

Side effects of Cylert:

Some of the most common side effects of the medication include dry mouth, irritability, nausea, headache, vertigo, insomnia, aggression, drowsiness, weight loss, stunted growth in children, skin rash, seizures, sleep pattern disturbances, depression, liver dysfunction, addiction, hypertension, Tourette’s syndrome, hallucinations, fatigue, irregular heart beat, fluid retention, ataxia, edema, stomach pain and diplopia.

Overdose:

Overdose symptoms include hallucinations, vomiting, agitation, tremors, confusion, flushing, increased sweating, irregular heartbeat, twitching and headache. In case of a drug overdose, it is essential for you to notify your doctor and contact the local poison control center at the earliest.
