Sleeping Disorders
June 25, 2009
Sleep is important for physical and emotional fitness. Lack of sleep can cause various physical conditions like exhaustion, tiredness, fatigue, drowsiness, giddiness, nausea, overall weakness, black out or slipping into unconsciousness.
Lack of sleep can cause emotional disturbances like disorientation, inability to concentrate, dull mind, jumping thoughts, restlessness, losing consciousness, awareness or alertness.
A minimum of 7-8 hours of sleep has been considered adequate for replenishing the mind and body. It helps in beating stress and physical exhaustion.
Some of the sleeping disorders are insomnia, disturbed sleep due to nightmares or thoughts, difficulty in falling asleep, waking up with tremors or startled movements, excessive sleeping and sleeping at odd times.
Insomnia is a condition where a person may not sleep adequately, and may still function normally. It will not lead to drowsiness or tiredness due to lack of sleep, however, persistent insomnia can cause strain on the eyes, mind, fatigue, mental dullness, restless and disquiet mind.
Sometimes a person may not be able to fall asleep easily. This may be caused due to excited or agitated state of mind, tension, anxiety, fear, botheration, needless thinking, roaming thoughts etc.
Some people may not be able to get a sound sleep at night. They may wake up many times and may just not be able to get sleep again. People with old age may suffer such a condition.
Abrupt waking up or getting up with a startled feeling can also be a condition. Sleep may also be disturbed as the breathing may slow down or breathing may suddenly stop due to the body posture, constriction or blockage.
Another increasing tendency is to sleep at odd hours. This is mostly due to change in working conditions and lifestyle. Working at odd shifts and rotations cause a change in sleeping habits and the body may not be able to adapt to daily changes in sleeping time.
Sleep is also compromised by working overtime, watching television late into the night, visiting discos, pubs.
