Seriousness and Stress

Many of us are serious individuals. We take all the things in life seriously, irrespective of the magnitude of importance an event has or not. For example, we are serious at our workplace even on days when the flow of work is less, we are very serious about duties and responsibilities though there is not an urgency in discharging these duties, serious in relationships, serious about problems and difficulties, household issues etc.

This seriousness takes away the energy and joy of living. Being this way becomes a part of life and then we do not feel okay when we are having fun, relaxing and feeling happy. Being serious becomes our second nature.

This tendency can have mental health implications too. Seriousness brings about a lot of tension, anxiety and nervousness. We find ourselves in a state of heightened alertness, not able to relax, in a hurry, impatient and panicking to complete every small thing we are supposed to do.

Being serious also indicates fear, lack of confidence, worry, low self esteem and an improper coping mechanism. By being this way, you are only depleting yourself of the mental energy you can use to address the issues bothering you.

Seriousness leads to a poor personality as your demeanour, your appearance, your expression turns negative. There is lack of calmness, serenity, confidence and assurance and this poorly impacts your physical condition too. There may be low appetite, feeling of dullness, tiredness, exhaustion, lack of stamina, body pain, headache due to constant thinking and worrying.

Being serious creates stress at a mental as well as physical level. It can also create a melancholic condition, morose mood, frustration, mood swings and depressive tendencies. Being serious doesn’t solve your problems. Be sincere not serious.

Whatever the problem, recognize it and handle it with a cool head. Not being serious will help you to think out rationally, generate better solutions, will prevent stress and safeguard your mental and physical health.
