Safety Tips in a New City

Some occasions arise where we have to go to new cities; say out of compulsion of professional tours, tours conducted for educational purpose, for research purpose, for visiting or for vacation. No place can be absolutely safe, however, you can use some tips for your own safety.

Be prepared. If you want to go out, to visit a tourist spot etc, ask a reliable person about the way to get there, route to take, the approximate charges that you will incur etc. Ask your hotel manager or use the local maps or information directories to find out information. Do not rely absolutely on untrustworthy, unknown people.

When you are looking for directions, you may prefer to ask people in authority, like say a traffic policeman, a policeman patrolling the streets, rather than ordinary walking citizens. Shopkeepers may also be a reliable source of information as compared to casual walkers in the streets.

As much as possible be in/with a group. This will add to your sense of security. Miscreants and anti social elements may not be able to attack you, rob you if you are with the group. They may follow loners, defenseless persons. If you are alone, just be alert and watch if you are being followed. Do not go to places that are secluded or dimly lit or isolated.

Carry just the enough money you require while traveling outside. Keep other belongings, valuables, jewels in your hotel room. Do not carry debit cards, visa cards, credit cards when not necessary. Wear limited ornaments.

If you are driving, observe the traffic and the ethics of drivers before you begin and then decide the speed, lane, route you will take. Be cautious and slow as initially you may not know the route, the turns, direction, kind of road etc. Do not get into speed driving.
