Remedies for Sore Throat
Sore throat causes a burning sensation that can make it difficult to talk, eat or gulp water or liquids. It can give a feeling of irritation, unease and restlessness.
The throat passage reddens considerably, and there may be a feeling of constriction or blockage in the area. The vocal chords feel strained and stressed and we may develop a horse voice.
To get rid of sore throat, medicated tablets available in the market could be helpful. You may use some tonic that has herbal properties too so that side effects like drowsiness can be avoided.
Products containing holy basil leaves, ginger extract, honey are good as they have properties to soothe the throat.
Drink warm water throughout the day. You may add drops of holy basil to it or crush the leaves and add it to water. Basil has anti bacterial properties and will help in combating the infection and bacterial action that has caused throat irritation.
You may also add honey or lemon drops to warm water and consume it throughout the day. It has soothing effect on the inflamed area. However, avoid consuming lemon or honey directly.
Adding crushed ginger to water or tea will be beneficial as ginger too has bacteria fighting capacity. You may sip on tea whenever you feel the irritation or dryness of throat.
Consume plenty of liquids. Avoid eating dry food, as it may get stuck in the throat, cause rashes or wound the inflamed area. Prefer having soups, mashed foods with more of liquid content so that it is easier on the tracts and passages of the throat. Avoid drinking too hot soups or drinks as it may further inflame the throat.
Similarly, avoid eating anything too spicy; rather a bland diet or diet with just a pinch of salt or crushed garlic for flavor will be better. Drinking a glass of warm water with crushed garlic is known to have healing properties too.
Gurgling is another effective method for relief. Fill up a jar with warm water and add a pinch of salt to it. Fill up your mouth with water and gurgle looking upwards so that the solution can clean the affected region in the throat.
External throat massage with sandalwood oil, garlic or ginger oil may also benefit in this case.
