Relaxation Techniques for Mind

Due to constant demand on your mental resources, the mind gets exhausted and stressed out.  The mind may also get hyperactive if there are too many things to do at the same time.  There may be continuous flow of thoughts that leads to disquiet and absence of peace and calm.  This can exhaust the mind.

Relaxation of mind is essential as it helps to refresh the mind and make it quick and active again.  A well-rested, relaxed and peaceful mind can handle difficult situations in a better manner.  It will also prevent stress, mental exhaustion and tension.

Yoga exercises in the morning can help to recharge the mind.  It generates positive energy and prevents negative thoughts and ideas.  Preventing negative thoughts avoids depletion of mental energy.

Meditation or focusing your mind on a particular object/image will relax the mind.  Meditation disciplines the mind and prevents constant flow of unnecessary thoughts in the mind.  It generates a calm and relaxed feeling.

Concentrating your mind on a soothing sound (like waves, birds chirping, soft breeze) or listening to certain chants or mantras can also have a similar impact on the mind.  Listening to ‘OM’ chants also helps to fight fear, insecurity and negative thoughts.

You can also induce a relaxed state of mind by conditioning the mind.  Lie down comfortably in a quiet place and repeat words like ‘relax’, ‘calm down’ etc in your head.  This induces a state of relaxation and calmness.

Sleeping is an effective way of relaxing the mind.  Rest adequately and sleep for atleast 7 hours daily.  Short naps or power naps during the day can remove exhaustion, tiredness and burdened feeling.

Visual images can be used to relax the mind too.  Lie down or sit comfortably on a chair. Loosen all your muscles so that they are not tensed.  Imagine that you are watching an ocean and slow rise and fall of waves.  You can even visualize the vast blue sky.
