Rebound Relationships

This is a relationship that happens when a person gets into a relationship while already being in another relationship, and not ending it properly. To use an analogy to describe it, let’s take the example of opening two heavy desktop applications on your computer. When you have opened a huge application that occupies almost all the memory on your computer, you will need to close this application, and let it get out of the memory on your computer, before opening another big application. So, if you open another application before closing the existing one, your computer might crash due to clash for memory space.

The same logic applies to rebound relationships. If you do not end a previous relationship properly, the fossil remains of that relationship will still linger in the sub conscious mind, and when another relationship arrives, this might create a clash.

So what are the negatives of a rebound relationship?

- Baggage carryover
All the emotional baggage from the previous relationship will be carried over to the new relationship. This happens because the previous relationship has not completely been seeped out of the psyche. This emotional baggage might create a lot of confusion. The recipient of this confusion will be inadvertently the new person in your life.

- Divided emotional equity
The emotional part of the self is very important. For a relationship to take off well, the two people in it will have to surrender themselves emotionally to one another. In a rebound relationship, there will be only a partial emotional surrender. This is because the person will still be emotionally attached to the previous relationship. The partial emotional surrender will show eventually. This can create discord and discontentment for the other person.

What are the positive of a rebound relationship?

- Erasing a failed relationship
This is akin to overwriting a song over another song on CD ROM. When you get into a rebound relationship, you are trying to erase old memories and emotional attachments by bringing in new ones.

- Moving on
It is very difficult to move on after a broken relationship. Rebound relationships help people to move on. As the saying goes…it is better to be a river than a lake. So the best way to deal with a broken relationship is to find a new and interesting one, that diverts one’s mind from any emotional back drafts.
