Rapport Building Tips

Rapport building is necessary in any social situation. It is important in an organization between an employer and employee, in teaching institution between the teachers and taught, in a social club, with communities and groups that you are willing to help and assist etc.

For development of rapport, have conviction about the need for the rapport or the relationship. If the relationship is very pivotal and indispensable, you will be more convinced and inclined to develop a rapport. Know the purpose, the true reason for your rapport building initiative. This can be the starting point to chalk out strategies or activities that can help the rapport building process.

Sincerity of intention and consistent effort is needed. Pursue the person with interest and genuine feelings. Do not have hidden agendas or intention of deceit, of extracting benefits for yourself from the relationship. Rapport can develop easier if the other person also sees the benefit and gains from the relationship.

Have a consistent manner. Rapport building can be a long process and there is need for dedication and willingness to take efforts to develop this kind of relationship. Do not confuse people with your mood swings, sudden change of temperament, ignoring them or making them feel unvalued or unimportant.

Be honest and open. Sincerity and honesty will help in reducing the strain of putting up a particular attitude or manner that some people take on to influence and win others. Be yourself and accept the individuality of the other person too.

Qualities like empathy, compassion, sensitivity, matured thinking, helping out, treating people as equals, not having a jealous streak, co-operation and participation rather than competition and aggression are better ways to break the ice and get going.

Take initiative. Be proactive if the other person is hesitant and tight lipped. Some times you have to go more than half the way to get a person to overcome his/her reservation, hesitation and develop rapport.
