Psychological Intervention for Depression
Depression is one of the most commonly occurring mental problems with the present generation. Lifestyle, stress, break down of relationships, changing socio cultural values etc. has contributed in making the modern man caught into the grips of depression which eventually compels them to destroy themselves by either committing suicide or just wasting away their precious lives.
Depression simply paralyzes healthy functioning of life. But all is not so dark and gloomy. There are several types of help available for the depressed persons to get out of the grips of negative thoughts and the resulting depression.
Depression may happen due to many reasons; situations and circumstances. But the individual’s psyche plays a great role in deciding whether to fall prey to depression or whether to fight back. One doesn’t have control over the situations life offer; but he does have a control over his mind and can decide not to fall into the vicious circle of negative thoughts.
Human beings are not perfect and it may happen that one may not be able to handle negative situations. Its then that he should look for the right help. Only thing that is required is the willingness on the part of the individual. He must be open to treatment without any prejudice, as depression is just a temporary ailment like any other physical ailment. There is no need to feel ashamed that you’re in depression; rather you should be ready to fight it.
Depression to an extent is normal and every individual is equipped with a defense mechanism to deal with it and come out of it after a certain time. But when he is unable to do so its time to take professional helps. Psychologists can be approached during such time. Psychotherapy or counseling helps the individual to face his problems and deal effectively with them. He gets the guidelines on how to live a normal and happy life.
Another very effective treatment is Cognitive Behavior Therapy. This therapy undertakes to deal with the negative and unrealistic disturbing thoughts and change them to positive thoughts. Relaxation is another process which can help to calm the mind and the ongoing stressful thought processes.
