Prevent Stress by Living in the Present

Worry, tension, anxiety, fear and insecurity about the future creates considerable stress. In order to secure the future, we put ourselves through a lot of strain, pressure and stress, be it at workplace, in day to day practices, household work etc.

However, whatever we do, it never seems enough and the fear and insecurity component does not allow us to be in a state of peace and contentment. We find out other avenues to improve our balances, financial stability, material objects and objects of luxury that mark our social status and standing. All this is done by sacrificing the current phase of living, postponing happiness for tomorrow (that may never come), neglecting our basic drives and passion, and sacrificing today and the present for the uncertain and unpredictable future.

Stop this practice. A person who is driven by insecurity and need for more and more cannot be content however much or less he has. When you stop thinking of your insecurities, you start living. The insecurities may have been created due to past experience and difficult times, however, do not get worried about those to the point of obsession.

Stress can be prevented if you take a practical and logistic view of life. Self consciousness and living in the present can be a great reliever for habitual worriers. Be conscious of your living, of the here and now, of the moments you spend each day, of the time you can use to fulfill your personal ambitions, desires, passion and happiness.

This is not to say that you should not think about the future. The point is to learn to draw boundaries about how much you will stretch yourself and when to let go. Mixing the material pleasures with spiritual pleasures or giving predominance to material pleasures can be a root cause of stress.

Maintain a balance in life. Value the present for the opportunities and possibilities of personal happiness that it offers. Live mindfully. Do not sacrifice today for tomorrow.
