Interview Anxiety
December 19, 2009
Interviews can be one of the most anxiety provoking situations in a person’s life. A person who is a first time interviewee may go though anxiety, panic, anticipation as he/she may not know what to expect and how will he/she be judged. Sometimes the stature of the organization, the personality of the interviewer may be so professional or striking that it may make a person feel inferior and under confident.
At the same time a person who has attended interviews in past and hasn’t had many positive experiences is likely to feel panicky and threatened by the interview, as the past unsuccessful interviews may flood the mind. Panic and anxiety may arise also by seeing the number of candidates that arrive for the interview. Too much demand for a limited position is likely to create tension and lack of confidence in an individual about his/her possibility to succeed in it.
Panic may also arise out the urgency with which you need the job. If you desperately need the job, the pressure to do well increases and causes stress. Combined with the above mentioned factors like stature of organization, number of applicants etc, this fear can get overwhelming and cause panic.
The kind of selection process employed by the company can also provoke anxiety. For some individuals, the logical or arithmetic component of the selection process may be threatening whereas some may find that the group discussion part is difficult. Some may be perfectly fine with written tests but may fear the face to face interaction with the interviewer.
Lack of confidence could be major source of anxiety. Not feeling that one is competent enough for the position. Lack of faith in one’s ability or fear that one may not be able to stand up to the expectations and demands of the job may cause uncertainty and anxiety during interview.
The thought of being judged poorly by the interviewer, negative attitude, inferiority complex, a feeling that they may not make it to the position and not be selected, fear that they may appear incompetent or unsuitable for the job or not make a positive impression on the interviewer creates pressure, stress and anxiety.
