How to Deal with People Who Make Fun of You

Being made fun of is an embarrassing feeling. You may feel upset, sorry for yourself, angry, ashamed about the way you are, inferior and disrespected if people are cracking jokes on you or have made you a laughing stock. This can make you feel inferior, unworthy, depressed, helpless, pitiful and may lower your self esteem, confidence, self value, dignity and respect.

Do not allow this to happen to you. Do not allow people to take away your self respect and confidence by their poor attitude, insensitivity and silly jokes. Probably they have dim minds and cannot think of anything more productive to do. Their attitude may be very trivial, condescending and it does not deserve your attention and response.

Do not shy away from them. Put on an image of confidence, ‘I don’t care’ attitude. Your body language will show your defiance and strength more than your verbal confrontation or efforts to get them to stop making you the butt of jokes.

Try a tit for tat. Pay them back in the same manner with your creativity and sense of humour. Experience is the best teacher, and it may teach them a few lessons in humility and sensitivity. They will know what it means to be treated this way, and may alter their ways.

Do not join them in their jokes. Do not laugh at yourself with them. Do no try to cover up the hurt you have felt. Do not say it verbally; but express it through a hurt look, a rough expression, like you didn’t find the joke funny, show a bit of anger. This can give them a clue that their joke was not appreciated and may warn them off.

Another trick you can use is look expressionless and unmoved with the joke. Or give a helpless look to others. This will put the person cracking the joke in a spot and he/she may feel embarrassed about it.
