Helping Teenagers Get Over Depression

Drawing teenagers out of their depression can be done by understanding their feelings and emotions during this phase. Having a friendly and open relationship with the teenager will enable you to know the factors that are causing depressive tendencies in the teen. If the teen is not able to confide in parents, an outsider, say a therapist or counselor may be helpful.

Sometimes teenagers move over their depressive feelings on their own, when they get adjusted to the changes in their body, their emotions, and find their own coping method to deal with depressing things.

Depression among teenagers may be due to change in the body, discomfort with the change, feeling of embarrassment or shame, attitude of peers or opposite sex towards them, increased roles and expectations, change in feelings and emotions etc.

It does take time to adjust to the new phase that teens grow into.  The initial inability to handle these changes can put them into a state of anxiety, tension or panic. They may also withdraw into themselves, go into silence, limit interaction due to fear, confusion, low self esteem, negative self opinion, poor body image etc.

To help them to overcome depression, try to create a positive atmosphere at home. Do give them space and time, but do not leave them on their own.

Talk about the changes that come with teenage, your experiences of teenage, how you coped with it, examples from the life of people you know, how to deal with the changes in your feelings and body and so on.

Do not avoid talking about intimate things. Your hesitation and conservative approach may put the teen off and they may not be able to confide in you.

Do not create a threatening feeling about teenage. Making it a celebratory event.

Do not distance yourself from your teens suddenly. Do not stop hugging or holding them just because they have turned into teens.
