Helping Children to De-Stress

Children get stressed out easily due to academic compulsions, burdens of tuitions and compulsory extra curricular activities, lack of opportunity for them to decide which activity they want to pursue, when and how to do it. For example, a child may find it relaxing to play a musical instrument at leisure and relax him/herself. However, persuading the child to practice daily at a particular time can be counterproductive and add to stress.

To help children to release stress, have a slightly lenient approach when it comes to the time children spend at home. Allow children to chalk out their timing for the activities that they want to do. Let children decide the hobbies they want to follow. Do not compulsorily enroll children into sports and activities that they have no inclination towards. Do not try to make all rounders out of children. Let them set their own pace.

Having a pet at home can considerably help children to relax and reduce the tension and strain. Being with a pet allows children to express their thoughts, talk to the pet, release his/her burden and even be comforted by a sympathetic, patient and loving pet.

Sometimes breaking the routine and schedule is a good way to let children feel free and unburdened. If the child feels bored or plainly disinterested in doing anything, try to spice up the child’s day by bringing in a children’s movie, taking them for a circus or pet show, or just taking them out for giving them food that they feel will revive their mood (say chocolate cakes, pastry or ice cream).

Keep holidays free. Plan outings for children so that they get a break from the daily monotony and boredom of following discipline and keeping track of tests and studies. Atleast one day must be fully devoted to enjoyment and fun. This will help the child to kick start energetically into the following week.

Taking children for a drive can also be a good way to de-stress them. Driving in a less crowded place or along a sea, when the climate is pleasant can be very relaxing for the child.
