Helping a Depressed Worker
A worker could be depressed because of professional reasons, personal reasons or the interplay of personal and professional factors.
A depressed worker may not be able to put in his/her effort and energies into the work, and cannot be as productive to the organization as he/she can be.
By addressing the professional concerns or having a consideration for his/her personal problems, will help to overcome the issues bothering them and break away from the depression.
A worker could be depressed due to absence of meaningful work, redundant work assigned to him/her, over burden of work, not having the professional skills and expertise to execute the work assigned, harassment by superiors or co-workers etc.
The supervisor or boss can be alert towards the condition of the worker. Change in appearance or attitude can indicate depression. A depressed worker may have low self esteem, may lack confidence to execute the work assigned, may be indifferent to what happens in the office, may not mingle with other workers, may be moody, withdrawn or aggressive.
Dwindling performance or increased absenteeism may be observed.
Having a private conversation with the worker will help the supervisor to know the reasons associated with his/her depression. Express your concern about the worker, and show a genuine willingness to help them.
Allow them to freely express their professional grievances and assess it objectively. Assure confidentiality so that they can speak up freely.
Redressing the situation to their satisfaction will be very beneficial. However, do not make hollow claims. If you recognize that the worker has not been given his credit or due for the job done, take corrective steps.
Praising them for work well done, giving performance rewards, incentives, bonus, more responsibility or promotion may help the worker to get over the feeling of not being valued. It will add to the self-esteem and confidence.
If the worker is not able to cope up with the work, ask him/her about alternative areas where they would like to work; or help them with on-the-job training and assistance.
