Onions are a good source of nutrition for people of all ages. It has umpteen health benefits. It has properties not only to cure temporary common ailments, but can go a long way in keeping you healthy and fit in the long run. It boosts the immunity in your body and helps in combating illnesses that have long term serious repercussions. It helps in avoiding some health conditions that arise in old age.

Onions are rich in several minerals and vitamins. To name a few, it is an important source of potassium, phosphorus and calcium. It comprises of vitamins A and C, and proteins too.

One of the important benefits of onion is that it does not contain fat or saturated fat and therefore does not lead to accumulation of fat either in the body nor in the blood vessels. Infact it has anti oxidant property that helps in reducing the fat content in the body. Needless to say, it does not add up too many calories on consumption, and also keeps the cholesterol level under control.

It is a good medicinal home remedy option for treatment of common cold or flu. Eating raw onion slices or adding it to curry could be helpful in providing some relief. It has anti bacterial and anti fungal properties that help in building immunity and resistance towards infections.

Women can also benefit by eating onions especially to combat menstrual pain. Adding chopped onions to yogurt and eating it may ease the pain and discomfort experienced. Apart from that it helps in contributing to the proteins content and calcium content that are vital for women’s health and fitness.

People suffering from piles can benefit from onions. Onions are rich in dietary fibre and help in smoothing the stools and facilitating easier passage.

Long term health benefits of onions are, it prevents respiratory problems like asthma, and helps in prevention of strokes and cardio vascular ailments.
