Handling Nosy Neighbours

Nosy neighbours can be a constant irritant. Their excessive intrusion into your life, prying for information, interest in your family affairs, over familiar behavior, imposing at odd hours can be bothering and irritating.

As much as you may want, you may not be able to talk to your neighbours strictly about their behaviour. Maintaining a good relationship with neighbours helps to have a good social life, assistance in case of emergencies and develop social bonds. So you may neither be able to openly state your repulsion at their behavior nor cope with their interference.

Such neighbours need to be handled with care and tact. Do not snap at every intrusion of the neighbour. Reflect upon the neighbour and their intentions. They may just be very well meaning people looking for a warm and family like relationship with their neighbours.

Such neighbours are relatively harmless and may not be a cause for real concern. They may just take joy in sharing and talking with you.  You may talk to them about time restrictions or your hurry to be at someplace and dodge a conversation that you do not want to get into.

A demanding neighbour can be a problem. Such a neighbour can be held at bay by slightly limiting your involvement and interaction with them. By using wit and humour, you can convey your feelings to them. Sometimes, you can avoid them by making excuses or plainly declining/refusing their demand for anything.

If the neighbour still does not get the clue and intrudes into your life, you may have a polite conversation with them stating that you do not feel comfortable with their excessive intrusion into your life.  Explain the reason to them, like shortage of time, needing more personal space, need for privacy etc.

The intention should not be to hurt or antagonize them. The point is just to make your feelings known to them. Do not display a hostile or rude behavior.
