Giving Space in a Relationship

Just like a plant, even a relationship needs space to grow. Relationships that have no space are nauseating relationships that will end in no time.

Talking about space, we hear this term everywhere, without really understanding what it actually means. What is space in a relationship?

Here is the definition for space in a relationship… Space in a relationship is giving your partner freedom of speech, expression, action and opinion. It is also about giving your partner opportunities to grow personally and professionally.

When can a relationship have no space?

A relationship has no space, when either partner is possessive of the other. This leads to a situation that reeks of jealousy, possessiveness, and lack of trust.

When there are a lot of dependencies, a relationship can clamor for more space. Dependencies can create a situation that requires constant and sometimes opposing intersections of opinions, judgments, and decisions. This creates a need to think and act individually.

How to give space in a relationship

If you are in a relationship, where there are lots of dependencies on each other, try to figure out a way to reduce those. Agreed, dependencies are part and parcel of any intimate and romantic relationship, but when these get stuck as responsibilities that cannot be shared or transferred, problems might arise.

Communicating with your partner can tide the problems of space in a relationship. Often these problems are seen as problems of ego. But they actually are not. A relationship is made up of two people, with their own identities. Here a need also arises to keep one’s individualism, but also be a partner of a beautiful relationship. By telling out these problems to your partner, you will gain a crystal clear view of the problem yourself, as well as elucidating your partner about this.

Take a break with your partner. Go on a holiday. Do things that interest you, and get your partner to involve in this. This will give your partner a clear understanding of your areas of interest. Better would be to call your entire friends home for a party. Make your friends get to make friends with your partner. This will get your partner to understand the kind of person you are, and the kind of friends you keep. It will also create a sense of understanding and trust.
