Generalized anxiety disorder

Generalized anxiety disorders is one of those disorders where the sufferer gets anxious to an extent that is totally out of sync with the actual problem.

It’s like worrying that you will bleed to death over a small injection wound. Some people have more of this tendency to ‘worry excessively’. This is called Generalized anxiety disorder (GAD).

These are the general GAD things to talk about…

- People with generalized anxiety disorder can’t perform their daily activities, as excessive worrying saps all energy from them.

- They have recurring thoughts of morbidity that is totally unwarranted. They anticipate things like an apocalypse, an epidemic, or a very bad health issue…things that are totally fine will still not satisfy their inner anxieties.

- People with GAD are highly irritable. They get fatigued easily. They are always in a state of tension, and show its signs like breathing heavily or getting shaky at the slightest issue.

- People suffering from GAD don’t sleep well. They twitch and turn during their resting hours. Concentration also becomes a major problem. People suffering from GAD do take to smoking to alleviate their anxiety levels, but little do they know that smoking only increases anxiety. Why does it happen…

- It happens when the worry controls the person and not the other way round.

- It can also be due to a highly competitive or destructive environment all around. A person suffering from general anxiety syndrome may be living in a society, culture or country that has a highly competitive environment for living. A person may also be living in a backdrop of destruction, like war etc

- It also runs in the family. So if you have somebody who worries excessively in your family, like your father or mother, you might also get it.

- It can also happen because of a defect in the balance of chemicals in the brain. When there is an imbalance of chemicals in the brain, the neurological transmission can also be affected. So there could definitely be an information dispensation, aggregation problem. So information will not be acted upon its right context in this situation.

There’s help
This kind of disorder is definitely not life threatening. Generally a good round of counseling is prescribed for mild conditions. There is also the alternative for medication for cases that have crossed a certain threshhold level. The best help for this kind of disorder is self-help.
