Feeling Homesick?

Many youngsters have various compulsions due to which they need to leave home and move out to other cities or countries. Further studies, higher education, getting educated in renowned institutions, better prospects of job, better opportunities available for creative expression may be some of the reasons why people move out.

Some may move out because they are fed up of the restrictive conditions at home, need to break free from monotony and routine, for experiencing freedom and absence of parental control etc.

People who move out of choice and people who are compelled to move out of their homes may feel the emptiness when they stay in new place, more so in case of people who didn’t have any other option than to relocate themselves. In the absence of family members, close friends and relatives, the lack of familiarity of the surroundings, difference in customs and practices, one may feel homesick and desperate to go back to home sweet home.

If you have completed the intended purpose of moving out, it is the best time for you to go back where you feel you belong. However, if your duration of stay is longer and uncertain, you need to figure out ways of dealing with this feeling. Pile up your holidays so that you can club these and take a longer holiday so that you can visit home.

It may also be helpful for you to have a normal and routine conversation with family members through email, online chatting or telephonic conversations. You can also get a web cam installed at both ends and see your family members and your house.

Do not build up your hopes when you know that you cannot be at home when you wish. Building hopes when things are uncertain can lead to desperation and desolation when things do not actually work out. Try to utilize the memories you have had in your home and feel the satisfaction of it.

If possible get your parents to visit you once in a while so that you feel supported and comforted by them. Make the most of this time you get with them, so that you feel satisfied and do not feel guilty when they have to return back.
