Eye Care

Proper eye care measures can prevent various ailments in the eye like infection, irritation, pain/burning sensation in the eye, conjunctivitis, premature dimming of eyesight, loss of vision, cataract and so on.

Eyes are delicate organs and need to be handled with care and caution. If your eyes itch, do not rub them harshly. Avoid touching the eyes frequently. Before cleaning your eyes, wash your hands thoroughly so that the dirt and microorganisms are removed.

Do not sit in the dark watching television or working on the computer. Focusing on bright lights constantly can cause strain to the eye and may lead to exertion on eye muscles, pain, burning sensation and watering of eyes. Always sit in a well lit place, whether at home or in workplace.

Keep adequate distance between the television/computer or books while watching or reading. Do not sit very close to the screen or monitor. It causes strain and also poses the risk of harmful rays penetrating the eye. While watching t.v. or computer you may use a protective screen to reduce contact with harmful rays or wear spectacles without number.

While working on the computer or while reading, place the object parallel or slightly below the eye level so that the neck and eye muscles are not strained while reading.

Do not stare continuously at the screen. Blink your eyes frequently to relax the pressure. Take breaks in between and close your eyes for a while to relax them.

While splashing water on the face take care to not splash water harshly in the eyes. While cleaning the eyes be careful about the kind of water available.

Apply cotton balls dipped in cold water on the eyelids to reduce the strain felt. Keeping cucumber slices over the eyes is also beneficial.

Adequate sleep and rest are also important for the eyes. Sleep for atleast 7 hours daily. Lack of sleep could cause burning sensation in the eyes, watering eyes, swelling, droopy eyes or dark circles.

Eat plenty of green leafy vegetables and carrots to maintain eyesight.
