Dissatisfied with Your Job?

Having a profession that makes you feel valued, satisfied, productive, and respected can add value to your life and make you feel confident and useful to yourself, your family and to the society too. A job that makes you feel satisfied, makes you feel that you are contributing to something important, your work and you matter to your organization, that people look up to you in trust and believe in your professional competence can be a very rewarding feeling.

However, if you feel demotivated towards your job, do not feel inclined to discharge your professional duties, hate the thought of going to office, feel strangulated at the workplace, it can not only lead to lack of professional efficiency, but it can mar your own self image, confidence, and feelings like confusion, anxiety, insecurity, helplessness, frustration and depression may develop.

Reason out why you do not like the profession. Is it because of the people in the organization, petty politics, the kind of assignment offered to you, dissatisfaction with appraisals, lack of appreciation, lack of better prospects for growth, or because you do not feel your personality is suited for the job, the current job does not create space for creative abilities, is not challenging enough, is not as per the criteria that you set up for your job and so on. Once you trace the root of your dissatisfaction, deciding on the future course of action may become simpler.

Make a list of qualities that your job profile must have, for example, it should allow you the freedom to express your creative talent, it should be more mentally rewarding than financially or otherwise, should allow you to compete and move up the ladder in the organization, should be comfortable as far as traveling and timings are concerned, will you prefer a desk job or a job that involves moving around, are you comfortable in handling the profile in terms of soft skills, interaction with clients etc. Setting up benchmarks and rating your job profile against these can give you an idea if you should stay in the job or move on.
