Coping with Work Related Stress
December 7, 2009
Work could be one of the predominant stress causing factors among people. People in high profile jobs, those working in target driven professions, those working in job profiles that require constant meeting of deadline, where there is cut throat competition and office timings are highly flexible and depend upon the requirements of clients based in other countries, stress levels are likely to be high.
Neutralizing this stress on a daily basis in necessary to prevent fallouts like ill health, hypertension, short temper and increasing anger, depression, mental disturbances, early burnout and so on. Work related stress may also affect personal or marital life causing conflicts or discontentment.
Drawing the boundaries of personal and professional is one step towards helping yourself to de-stress. Disentangling yourself from the compelling obsessive tendency to work is very important. A person needs to exercise discipline and strictness so that he/she doesn’t bring on the work related hangover at home. Try to disengage from your profession once you have left your workplace.
Keep a slot of at least one hour each day for yourself. This is the time you must use exclusively for yourself. Do what you feel helps you to unwind, relax, calm down, takes your mind away from the tensions and frustrations of the profession. Invest time on yourself everyday so that you feel energized, recharged and motivated.
While you are at workplace, keep in touch with well meaning people, people who have a positive attitude, who do not engage in idle gossip who will offer you help and assistance at your time of need.
Manage your time well at workplace. Time management will help you to be ahead of schedule, will not create the pressure of deadline and therefore eliminate scope of stress. Avoid delaying and procrastinating your work for the other day. Clear all backlogs as soon as possible.
Try to de-stress yourself even during work hours. For example, take a small stroll after suitable time intervals or sit comfortably in your chair and deep breathe. Catch up with friends during lunch break and have a hearty talk with them. This will provide a break from stressing thoughts about the work you have to do, and will help you to relax.
