Coping with Recession Induced Depression
The current slowdown in the economies world over has had a negative fallout in the mental health of people. Cases of depression can be seen among individuals who have lost their jobs, who have not found any other place of employment, have many financial obligations, do not have savings to support them and so on.
The rising costs and inflationary trend also leads to stress, tension, fear and insecurity about meeting daily needs. Pressures from family, peers and relatives or untoward comments can also lead to feelings of hopelessness, helplessness, frustration and may lead to depression.
By taking certain self-preservation measures and by accessing the situation realistically, you will be able to better control your mental state.
Do not hit the panic mode immediately if you lose a job. Do not take the blame of job loss personally. Do not lose your self-confidence, self esteem and respect. Do not feel that you lost the job because of your lack of performance, inability to do well and so on.
Register with websites or social networking sites where you can come to know of various positions available with other organizations. Resist the temptation to take up any job irrespective of your liking; at the same time avoid being very selective and choosy.
Do not feel insecure about not earning; and do not fear your financial stability. Know the money you/your family has got in cash and bank, instead of panicking and fretting about money.
Feelings of being unproductive, shame, guilt etc could prevail. However, do not let these feelings affect your thoughts, attitude and perception of yourself.
Keep yourself busy by searching for other jobs. Be in touch with friends or relatives to know about the vacancies they know about. Do not be hesitant or ashamed to ask for help.
Keep yourself fit by eating well and exercising. Do not punish yourself by starving. Engaging in sports, exercises, yoga or meditation will help you to beat the depressed feeling and feel energetic, positive and confident.
