Coping with Interview Anxiety

The thought of appearing for an interview can cause anxiety among many of us. The anxiety could be a result of the pressure to get the job, fear of speaking to people in higher position, lack of confidence, inadequate knowledge about the organization’s requirements, lack of faith in one’s ability and capacity etc.

During interview we emphasize a lot on being correct and being just the perfect candidate for the post. This creates an acute pressure to do well. The mind gets overworked, the muscles get tensed, there could be nervousness, restlessness and agitated state of mind till the interview is over and done with.

This state can lead to fidgety behavior, inappropriate manners and may create a negative impression about you. Therefore, you can take a few steps beforehand and prepare yourself well, so that you can reduce the anxiety created during interview.

Firstly, get to know the background of the company by going through their website. Have a correct understanding of the job position being offered.  Be sure that you want to apply for this position. Familiarity with the company and job profile will reduce your apprehension and anxiety.

Prepare a set of questions that you expect will be asked to you. Make up your mind as to how you will answer the questions. Get the facts straight and give honest answers.

You can practice with your friends or family members. Ask for an honest feedback and suggestions, and incorporate it if you find it important.

You may also practice by speaking to yourself in the mirror. Watch yourself and improve on your body language, your level of enthusiasm, motivation, your tone etc. This will add to your confidence during the interview.

Have an open mind. Be well rested and in a positive state of mind before the interview. Concentrate on your breathing and take a conscious effort to losen stiff/tensed muscles.

Prepare well, answer sincerely, and leave the rest to the interviewer.
