Coping with Examination Stress

Examinations can cause a lot of stress among many of us. The stress is often a result of pressure, extra effort, lack of relaxation, fear of poor performance, competition or due to inadequate preparation.

The fear of exams and stress can lead to restlessness, agitation, panicking and losing calm and composure. This has a negative effect while we actually perform during the exam. Managing or controlling stress at such times is essential so that you are mentally and physically fit and alert while giving the exam.

Relaxation is in an anti dote for a stressed mind and body.  Continuous studying or running thoughts about the exam can be very mentally exhausting, and can make you feel disoriented and lose your focus. Therefore you may have to induce a state of relaxation and calmness.

This can be done by relaxation techniques like deep breathing.  It calms you down, reduce the agitated and restless feeling, and can help in reducing stress. Guided imagery methods, like lying in a quiet place and imagining yourself to be an open beach and concentrating on soothing waves of the ocean can induce relaxation.

Yoga and meditation is also beneficial. Yoga generates positive energy.  It helps to overcome feelings of fear, insecurity, helplessness and generates courage and confidence. Certain yoga postures are known to reduce tension in the muscles and provide faster relief from stress.

A power nap of about 15-20 minutes is also an effective way of neutralizing stress. A good nap rejuvenates the mind and body, and helps you to get back on your feet again.

Do not study late into the night day after day. Try to not alter your sleeping schedule. Lack of sleep or disturbed sleep can lead to stress.

Do not compromise on food.  Eat small meals at regular time intervals to prevent exhaustion. You may also sip on fresh fruit drinks.  They contain natural sugar and give instant energy.

De-stress yourself by watching television or playing your favourite music.
