Conflicts Between Same Profession Couples
Couples belonging to the same profession may face conflicts due to the similar nature of the profession they belong to. The conflict could be a result of competition, rivalry, threat sensed in sharing professional ideas, or due to similar kind of work pressures.
The gender element can also give another dimension to the conflict. Men could feel jealous of the achievements or designation of the partner in the same profession. There could be insecurity regarding the growth and success of the partner.
Men may also object to the wife devoting more time to their profession and may blame the wife for neglecting the house and husband.
On the flip side, partners working in the same profession or dual-career couples can be more equipped to reduce conflict, as they would understand the pressures of the profession, the time and effort required, value of the work they do, constraints arising out of it and the sacrifices and compromises needed.
These similarities can help them to understand what each of them go through everyday. This can develop an understanding and sensibility towards each other.
To avoid conflicts, it is best to keep the professional and personal life at bay. Not because sharing professional ideas is threatening; but because your life will only revolve around the profession.
Having a deeper level of trust and faith in each other will also help you to manage your lives well.
A little bit of non-interference is also beneficial. Do not intrude on the space of the partner. Do not insist on your partner giving you details about the projects they are working on, intricate matters of the profession etc.
None of the partners should insist on full disclosure of what they are working on. A little bit of breathing space and marking the professional boundaries is important.
Check against your ego. Do not feel threatened by the growth your partner makes in the profession. Don’t let professional competitiveness intrude upon your personal life.
