Concussions

Concussions happen when the head takes a hit that results in injury of sorts to the brain. Concussions happen as a result of this hit. Though they are not fatal, they do pose problems for the sufferer, time and again.

A person may suffer from a concussion due to an unlucky mishap that has resulted in an injury to the head. The mishap may be an accident, or a fall from a bike or horse, a sports injury etc.

Concussion happens when the injury does not cause any kind of hemorrhage. Normally the patient is administered a brain scan or in other words a computer tomography (CT) scan. If there is bleeding this is captured by this scan, and the injury is thus classified otherwise.

So what can concussion do to the sufferer?

The following are the symptoms of concussion

- It causes loss of consciousness that is temporary or prolonged

- It can also cause a coma-like situation, where the person takes a lot of time to recover from the unconscious state

- There is also a decline in activity levels like loss of interest in day-to-day affairs

- A general unexplained lethargic attitude

- Absolutely no control over one’s physical movements or mental reasoning and logic

- Easily aggravated over trivial things

- Severe concussion may result in memory loss of varying degrees

- There are frequent bouts of severe headaches

- A short-term-memory loss condition, that results in the sufferer seeking clarifications on something over and over again, or finding it difficult to execute without repeated guidance

- There is also a severe loss of behavior predictability. Concussion causes total disorder in the persons thinking pattern. Most times the thought and behavior is muddled with no clarity.

- Concussion also causes dimmed vision. The person will find it difficult to see things in broad daylight. All objects will seem hazy in appearance.

- There can also be frequent episodes of vomiting that result in fatigue and weariness.

Treating concussion

Here are some points on treatment of concussion…

- Before everything there needs to be CT scan taken to assess the injury

- You need to provide the patient lots of rest, and sleep to fully recover the person from concussion

- There should be minimal physical movement during the recovery period
