Colour Therapy for Mood Swings

Colours have an impact upon our psyche and bring about changes or alterations in the mood. Many of us may have observed that when we wear a certain colour, we tend to feel cheerful, positive, energetic and enthusiastic, whereas some colours make us feel dull, subdued or serious, or confident and powerful.

Each individual has a set of colours that goes with his/her personality. This colour can either bring out your true personality or can subdue or mar it. These changes that colours bring out in the personality, attitude or behaviour of a person can be used as a therapy to deal with mood changes.

Colours have a feel and energy of their own. Bright colours like orange, yellow, red, violet have a vibrant, energetic and lively appeal. Therefore these colours can be used when you are feeling down, feeling bored, dull, have a low mood etc. Wearing these colours may create enthusiasm, cheerfulness and liveliness in you and take you to an upbeat mood.

Some colours can help you to calm down and induce a state of peace and relaxation. For people who have an agitated state of mind, are stressed out and restless, have lot of energy that is not being channelized, feel like they are bubbling with a lot of energy and dynamism, can wear light soft colours to bring down the tempo and euphoric mood.

High spirits also need to be contained some times, because if they do not find a channel of expression or outlet, it can lead to frustration, helplessness, anxiety, irritation and agitation. Therefore you may choose to wear soft colours like sky blue, beige, light pink, light brown or light green colour to neutralize the elevated mood.

Colour can be used for personality alteration too. For example, if you want to feel confident and energetic, you can wear red, if you want to appear professional, independent and as a person having command and authority, black, navy blue or dark brown is the colour for you.
