Medical care and professional assistance should be made available to people having severe mental illness. Therapy, psychiatric intervention and medicines can reduce the symptoms and ailment.
Ensure that you follow the advice given by the doctor. Administering timely medicines is also important. You may consider keeping the person at a mental health facility if you cannot manage it and are not around the house to look after the person.
Keep the atmosphere at home peaceful and pleasant. Ensure minimum level of disturbance when the person is resting. Highly nutritious food and adequate sleep is essential since the drugs used for treatment could be strong.
Avoiding putting television programs containing high level of violence and emotional drama, suspense or those telecasting events that have occurred in the person’s life.
Do not display negative attitude or anger towards the person. Do not use demeaning words to indicate their condition. Do not make their condition very obvious and taunt them about it.
Understanding and loving them the way they are is important. Do not express your sympathy for their condition before them.
Do not be mistaken that they have completely lost their sense and do not follow what you say or do. Mentally ill patients in fact may be vigilant and alert as to what is happening around them.
Keep the number of the doctor and mental institutions handy, so that in case the person gets violent or aggressive, you can use the assistance of professionals before any harm is done.
